Art history often focuses on a small selection of well known names. Yet there are thousands of other artists that deserve our attention just as much.

So here are four very different artists whose work you may not know and whose ingenuity are worth discovering more about.

Agnes Goodsir

Agnes Noyes Goodsir was an Australian portrait painter who lived in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. The contemporary figures in her art are often sophisticated and voguish — making an enthralling combination.

Born in Portland in southwest Victoria in 1864, Agnes Goodsir was originally drawn to still-life painting before she dedicated her vocation to (mostly) portraiture.

At the age of 36, she took the bold step of moving from Australia to France and enrolling in several Parisian art schools. Her works began to be featured in public exhibitions, gaining her important commissions from figures such as the actress Ellen Terry and the writer Leo Tolstoy.
