Thanks Ruben. I really enjoyed Miller's book about Greece ("The Colossus of Maroussi"). The style is so utterly different to Durrell's, but both accounts glow with enthusiasm and affection for the place.

I've never come across Janet Malcolm before, but she sounds very interesting - thanks for the suggestion.

I'll be going back to paintings next time!
